The Diva Runs Out of Thyme is an enjoyable first book in the Domestic Diva Mystery series. I have read all the books in this series to date, but I wanted to start from the beginning because of the complex relationship dynamics of the main characters.
Sofie Winston, the main protagonist, is hustling to get ready for a small Thanksgiving dinner with her family. She stops by the local grocery store to pick up some items for the feast. A man stops her in the parking lot and offers her a free kitten. At first, she declines and proceeds to shop. However, Sophie has a change of heart while she is picking out her Thanksgiving fare. When she returns, she is horrified to find the man is dead in the dumpster, and things become eerier when Sophie discovers the mystery man knows her name and personal information. Wolf, the police officer investigating the suspicious death suspects foul play. But, who is the man in the dumpster? Why does he have Sophie’s information? Why does someone want him dead?
The chaos continues at Sofie’s house when the guest list multiplies so quickly it makes her head spin. Natasha her long-time friend/nemesis and her partner Mars, who is Sophie’s ex-husband, join the Thanksgiving meal because they had a kitchen fire. Therefore, Mars’s mother (Sofie’s ex-mother-in-law) also joins the guest list.
Suddenly, neighbors, friends, and even the police officer, Wolf, who is investigating the murder joins the group. It’s a good thing Sophie has enough food. (There was an Old Lady who swallowed a fly, I don’t know why she swallowed the fly… comes to mind as the guest list expands.) This is why I reread and critiqued the first book for you, and I haven’t even covered all the characters.
A short while later, Sophie and Natasha compete in a televised cooking competition where sabotage is afoot. Shockingly, a judge is found murdered, and Wolf is starting to question Sophie’s innocence. Fear not, the suspect list proceeds to become longer and longer as the Wolf discerns the judge was an unsavory man who hurt many people in his path.
With the holiday season just around the corner, this is the perfect time to curl up and start reading the Domestic Diva Mystery series! Once you get to know the characters, you will want more. (Luckily, there are 10 books in the series that have already been published.) This series is delicious!
This book includes recipes for First Murder Pecan Pie, Crusty Country Bread, Bacon, and Herb Stuffing, Chesapeake Cornbread Stuffing, and Cranberry Mushroom Wild Rice Stuffing. In addition, Natasha (gives impractical, therefore witty, entertaining advice) while Sophie counters with practical and useful entertaining advice.
If you enjoyed this book, you may also enjoy Aunt Dimity and The Widow’s Curse.
